South East London
Violette Bushell was born in 1921 to an English father and French mother. She married a Free French soldier in 1940. Etienne Szabo was killed at El Alamein, leaving her with a baby daughter.
Deciding to make use of her bilingualism, she became a secret agent and made two missions to France to aid the Resistance. She was captured in June 1944 near Limoges while allowing a comrade to escape – yet gave nothing away to the Gestapo. Taken into Germany, she died at Ravensbruck in early 1945.
Her heroism is remembered in the 1958 film ‘Carve her Name with Pride’ and by a plaque in Burnley Road SW9. Her bust adorns the recent memorial to the members of SOE which can be found on the embankment near Lambeth Palace.
No one has been more deserving of a posthumous George Cross than Violette. Her little girl Tania accepted it from the King in 1947.
